A389 - Interview with DOM of A389 Records
July 2006
Dom from A389 Records in Baltimore has been working hard to release a solid record nearly every month lately. The first couple releases, both Self titled EP's from the bands Bring it On and In My Way featured art from Dwid Hellion, a veteran of the Cleveland Hardcore scene and frontman of the legendary group Integrity. Imaginative art is a running theme the label, with a Three Dimensional cover for the Everyday Dollars E.P. w/ 3D glasses and the more recent Holy Ghost album with a hand numbered print included. Coming soon from the label are a steady schedule of 7 inch record releases, a Gut Instinct Discography CD and a Slumlords DVD that's due for a release around Chirstmas time. You can check out their website at www.slumlordsevictioncrew.com/a389records/

1.How long have you been doing A389 Records?

It's been about a year and a half since me and Laura decided a Bring It On record needed to come out, the rest is a blur.

2.What's going on in Baltimore right now as far as shows, up and coming bands etc?

Tons of shows, all week, every weekend it can be overwhelming at times.  Lots of out of town kids like coming to shows in Baltimore, it's always a good time.  Friendly people, no fights, cheap booze, something for everybody.  Bands to watch out for from the area are Taken By Force (imagine a cross between Merauder/DeathThreat), Paper Dragons (THE SPARK's new band), Deep Sleep (80's west coast hc...way awesome), Ruiner, Spit On Your Grave, Stout of course, everyone here's always into something. New band called Surroundings, I just heard their demo...good stuff as well.

3.It's obvious that kids are excited about A389, how does it feel to grow as a records label so fast and have the ability to put out records on  almost a monthly basis now?

I'm totally excited that so many people are into the records.  All I wanted to do was put out records that I wanted to have myself, and it's awesome that so many other people are into them as well.  Going from doing a record every few months to doing a couple a month is crazy, but I'm not scared.  Everything is going well, and I'm having a great time doing it.

4.What are a few of your personal favorites among the records released on A389?

Wow thats like asking to pick your favorite kid.  I love them all for different reasons.  I'm really excited about the Gut Instinct Discography CD, that band  was criminally underrated and it's great to hear all the songs together and sounding good.  Holy Ghost 12" ended up being really cool as well.

5.What's going on with The Slumlords right now? I thought the last LP was really solid. Have you guys started to record any new material since "On The Stremph"?

We've decided to take the rest of 2006 off.  We just needed a break from it.  Considering we initially started the band with the intention of never driving further than 3 hrs for a show, it's safe to say we took on a lot, and need to spend some time taking care of other things in our lives.  We have a couple shows left and then were working on the DVD until we're ready to start playing again.  In the meantime I'll be doing the label more, and playing with my other band PULLING TEETH.

6. What can we expect from the DVD being released later this year?

Live stuff spanning from our very first show to the last bunch of shows in europe, cartoons, some other surprises. It should be pretty cool.

7.What's your favorite pizza joint and why?

Spartan's Pizza on the corner of Eastern/Highland Ave.  I really don't know why, I think it's just because that place has always been there for me, whenever I really needed pizza.

8. Can bands send you demo's? If so, where can they send them to?
Sure thing. PO Box 12058 - Baltimore, MD - 21281
