Bad Brains @ CBGB

Bad Brains
CBGB NYC October 10, 2006

It was a beautiful, Tuesday evening that would mark my last time at CB’s. What better way to end it all, but to see my favorite band of all time. Bad Brains have come back to where they spent their formative years to bid CB’s a proper farewell.

My evening started out at a bar across the street, knocking back $3 Bud Lights with some buddies. Apologies to the opening bands, but it was my birthday and I needed to tie one on before the big show. Walked in right before Bad Brains. The place was fucking mobbed. I went straight to the bar for 2 brews, and made my way towards the stage. Bad Brains took the stage soon thereafter. Even though they don’t possess the energy of the ‘82 Brains, they still came out swinging. HR came out dressed like it was wintertime, but didn’t even break a sweat the entire show. He must possess some super human power that keeps him cool even when it’s a thousand degrees. They ran through all of the classics, even playing Secret 77, which I had never heard them do live. I screamed along like I was 15 again.

People like to complain about how Bad Brains are but a shell of their former self. At the end of the day they played a solid set, even with the flaws. I was glad to have been witness to such a great set. Let’s keep in mind that if it weren’t for Bad Brains, more than half the bands in hardcore wouldn’t exist today. In 2006, they don’t owe us shit. If anything we owe them for being Bad Brains.
