Pellinore Review

Pellinore plays heavy, sludgy hardcore with a ton of blast beats and spastic vocals. The lyrics and artwork are very cool, utilizing a medieval wood cut of satanic beasts. The lyrics have a medieval bent as well and are written about such things as castles and drawbridges and carrying your sword into battle. They are well written and interesting. On the other hand the music sounds a little overproduced, and the overabundance of blast beats make the songs hard to differentiate a lot of the time. The music isn't bad, but it's not particular good either. Pellinore is at it's best when they are playing sparse, creepy intros like in such the first song "Catastrophe" or the seventh track "Drawbridge Chomper", in fact, I find myself liking the intros more than the actual songs themselves. I do give them credit for having an original sound, because the only band I can compare them to would be Integrity, and that's still off the mark, the trouble is, a band can have the most original sound in the world but if the songs don't stick in your head than it doesn't mean anything. I wanted to like this a lot more than I did because the art and lyrics were intriguing, unfortunately most of the music doesn't quite live up to the rest of it.
