This is one of the best comps I've heard in awhile. You get 35 tracks of Hardcore, 95% of which would be considered "tough guy" hardcore for lack of a better term. On the surface this may seem a bit much, that was one of my first impressions, but upon further listening I found myself unable to take this out of my CD player. Northside Kings come out of the gate strong with "Thugcore" as the first song on the CD. This song is hard as hell, and sticks in your head, a great way to kick things off. It's got some crunchy guitar riffs that just pummel you. When this harder, metal influenced style is done right, it makes me want to wild out and stomp on someone's neck, this shit was done really right. Hard Response is a name I've seen around before, now that I got to hear them I'm impressed. They have the second best song on here with "Belligerant Bastard" another song that'll have you humming the hook all day. It was really cool to hear The Uprise's version of "Friends, Fights, Fun" a song re-done fairly recently by Everyday Dollars. The Uprise version is infinately cooler. There are some covers on here, some good, some bad. The good ones were Murderer's Row covering YDL "Skins for Skins" (I know it's not politically correct to cover or even like this band, but personally....I don't give a fuck. To me, good music is good music regardless of politics and YDL were one of the first to fuse Oi with the newer American Hardcore sound.) and The Slumlords doing "Take a Stand" by Youth of Today. This one had me in stitches with the singer opening the song by saying "Alright everybody under the age of 16, please come up to the stage and rub against my hot sweaty body" and then doing the song with a weird choppy growl that is meant to mimic Ray Cappo's. Even with the comedy, they really blaze through this one. The Wisdom in Chains cover of Cocksparrer's "We're Coming Back" was not so hot, continuing a streak they started on their first EP by butchering a Black Sabbath song, now I love the band, but dude's voice just doesn't work on certain stuff, the Mushmouth cover of "Sailin' On" by Bad Brains also fell way short. There was some other stuff on here that never rose above the same tired, metalcore cliche, thankfully that material is in the minority. Most comps nowadays have more filler than solid tracks, this one doesn't and as you listen to it more and more you can pick up different things you like about it. Compared to somewhat recent comps like State of the Scene, this one is a lot more solid and now that I think of it, I kind of like that it's mostly of one style and not all over the place. Worth buying for sure.
