Big Collapse

Here we have a band made up of some pretty familiar faces from NYC, Gavin formerly of Burn and Josh from Shift, now relocated to sunny California. I have always been a huge Burn fan while Shift has always left a bad taste in my mouth. In fact the most annoying part of Shift was always the vocals and the obvious Quicksand cloning. With all that aside I really love this record. The first song, Love Empire, screams of old Shift. Besides this track, the rest of the record is your standard rock fair with some exceptional song writing. Vocally it still bears a resemblance to what Josh did in Shift but it just comes off stronger now. And even though Gavin plays Bass in the Big Collapse I can't help but hear some of the familiar Gavinesque guitar tones he has always been known for. Help the band pay some rent and get this joint. I know I'm probably going to get shit from the elitist sect for the following comment but fuck it. This Hot Water Music record is quite boring. Now lets not get all twisted and shit. I don't think they're a shitty band, just not very inspiring. I have friends that have gotten into this band after seeing them live. Maybe that's the trick. But for now, I'll have to pass on this. If it ain't broke, don't fix it." That should be Maiden's motto. The new record opens with, Wildest Dreams, which sounds like it could have come off of Powerslave. No More Lies reminds me of Rime of the Ancient Mariner. You can't fault a band for having an amazing formula and continuing to release records of quality (with a few exceptions of course). The only downside to this record is the cover art. Maiden has always been known for the amazing depictions of Eddie on the covers. This time around they went for some computer generated doo-doo. Come on guys, remember, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Now, I probably won't be busting this album as often as Piece of Mind or Number of The Beast but it still doesn't change the fact that it burns. (columbia)

I can't understand why this band isn't huge. I don't know if it's the overly gay themed songs that scare people but cats need to get a little more confident with their sexuality and feel Turbonegro. It's just rock-n-roll baby. Don't be scurred. (burning heart)
