What
a difference a name makes. By now you’ve all heard
the stories of why this band no longer goes by the name
American Nightmare so I won’t bore you with the
details. I use to be one of those American Nightmare
haters. But all that has changed, my friends. What I
found the most annoying before was Wes’ voice.
To me, it seems, as if he’s gotten a little more
control of his scream. Some may say that it’s
running along the lines of the today’s typical
hardcore singers/screamers. I tend to think it’s
made him and the band a stronger, more focused unit.
And you can actually understand some of the lyrics this
time around. Another thing that I’ve noticed is
the addition of more pronounced melodies in the music
while still managing to retain its hardcore elements
ie. the breakdown. GUTG’s new approach has made
a fan out of the most ardent non-believer…me.

This
ain’t c...rap; it’s Strong Island North
Shore dope! Nice raw beats and some 'back to basics'
that although some will say it’s a Beastie rip
off, kids better know everyone else has ripped off everyone
else and in most cases with no talent so stop calling
out nothing. There has been no invention, only re-invention.
Even if it were a rip off they would be the first to
do it, so that in it self, in this day and age, is original.
Is the fact they are white and 3 an artistic similarity?
Hideous Hesta and the girls here have much talent and
the likes of the Roots and De La Soul were some of the
first to recognize if I got my story straight. Young
kids and especially young girls are probably not as
down with the Beasties as some would think anyway, those
dudes are like 40 now no matter how much respect do.
Even if somewhere in the groups formation the simile
was dropped, it is still original and done so well,
so fuck yeah; but if that’s all you think you
hear you are missing out on some young women that will
play roles in lives. Peace to LI. Strong Island in full
and total effect! (columbia)

Enveloping
the listener with a luscious blend of sultry vocals
and ambient instrumentation, A Perfect Circle has achieved
a perfect balance with their new release. Whatever,
this record is fresh. “hirteenth Step
is definitely a “vibier” affair, in contrast
to the more song oriented Mer de Noms, but
all of the elements that make Maynard, and A Perfect
Circle beyond reproach are plainly evident in this new
slab of musical brilliance. (virgin) |
