This
was arguably the most talked about CMJ show in years and the
highlight of this past year’s festivities, by far. Bringing
together 2 spectrums of eccentric ness seemed to be the focus
for this event. The Dillinger Escape Plan
and Ol' Dirty Bastard (currently known as Dirt McGirt)
don't have much in common musically except a common bond to
irk and confuse people. This show was beyond sold-out, even
with its 1am start time. DEP opened in strong fashion and
actually pulled off a tight set. I say actually, because I
am not a fan of the current singer; he's never done anything
for me except make me want to go home. But he didn't annoy
me that much, and they played well. Up on the balcony of the
Knitting Factory was a peanut gallery of ODB's friend and
family. The staff at the club escorted them and some patrons
were actually asked to leave to make room for them. It makes
sense to throw out the people that paid to get in, right?
The wait begins and we finally here ranting coming from the
microphone. After a 10 minute long introduction by what could
only be described as a fatter Fat Albert, the stage was decorated
with an assortment of colorful characters (no pun intended)
and finally ODB comes out in a totally useless, drugged out,
overly medicated haze. He stared into the crowd and probably
only got to say about 20 lines the whole night. His 43793279
friends overran the rest of the set on stage; who will never
be remembered after this night. But, it was a fun filled evening;
I left smiling. It was a good time; not one that will look
good on paper, but I definitely had a blast. It was like watching
a train wreck with a laugh track. There was even some “titty-sucking”
on stage. This one girl groped, made out with and had her
titties sucked by like 5 dudes on stage. I picked the wrong
night to be in the back. Oh yeah, and the crowd kept chanting
my name, which I thought was pretty cool. I didn't even think
they noticed me. Aww shucks.
