I
haven't looked forward to a show in a very long time. I guess
I have reached the age where I believe to have seen all the
bands that matter and I kill time seeing bands that matter
to everyone else. Such was NOT the case with this event. I
call it an event, because it was more than a show.
It was the culmination of what I had been waiting for, for
a long time. I had never gotten the chance to see Turbonegro.
When they played in NYC a few months ago, I was away on tour.
At the end of that tour I was surprised to find they were
playing twice in one night at the Troubadour in Los Angeles.
Much to my dismay both shows were cancelled; Just my luck.
Upon hearing that Turbonegro was playing NYC again, I postponed
my trip to the west coast and decided to stay home and not
miss out once again. The opening band was known as Bad Wizard.
They were pretty boring. I wouldn't call them horrible, but
not very good. Let me put it like this, you can't have a White
Castle cheeseburger as an appetizer for a lobster dinner.
Get it? Anyways, I moved my way up the front
and patiently waited for Turbonegro to hit the stage. The
stage was a dark hue of purple and black. Decorated with crosses
and skulls, the stage wasn't meant to be ominous, but more
tongue in cheek. They hit the stage with "Wipe
It Till it Bleeds" and then exploded into “Self-Destructo
Bust." They played an awesome mix, covering
a good amount of material off of "Apocalypse
Dudes", "Ass Cobra"
and "Scandinavian Leather". I was
far beyond blown away. I was also impressed by how Hank had
the audience in the palm of his hand. He broke out references
to "Beat Street" and proceeded to inform the crowd
of his first exploits in New York City complete with break
dancing moves. Their presence coupled with their strong body
of material made for a memorable evening. If you have never
seen this band, please be aware that you are in for more than
a show. You're in for an experience. These guys are more than
a band, they're performers who leave their guts all over the
stage without hesitation or fear of ridicule.
They don't play the US too often, so give in to your curiosities,
check them out and 'sell your body to the night'.
